Mary was a typical teenage Jewish girl trying to honor God in how she lived her life. Then an angel told her that she was going to become pregnant. How would she explain this to her family? Her parents knew that Mary was engaged to Joseph, so they would of course believe that Joseph was the baby’s father. How would her parents deal with the second shock of hearing Mary say that the baby she carried was not Joseph’s, but was conceived by the Holy Spirit? Who in their right mind would believe this? Even with all this uncertainty, Mary was still willing to submit to God’s plan for her life.
In human terms, God was asking a lot of Mary: Her life would never be the same. But God knew Mary’s heart. He knew she could handle this very difficult situation because she believed God and trusted Him.
