Consider this …
In Luke 18, we read of Jesus’ encounter with a rich young ruler. The young man asked Jesus what he needed to do to obtain eternal life. Jesus mentions several commandments, and the young man replies that he has kept all of them. Jesus then instructed him to sell all he had and “Come, follow me.”
Hearing Jesus’s response caused the rich man to become very sad, and he chose not to follow Jesus. Imagine how sad Jesus must have been at his decision! Jesus knew where the man would spend eternity. Some might wonder, “Shouldn’t Jesus have run after him and offered him an easier way to obtain eternal life?”
Jesus’s response was in obedience to His Father’s standard. God’s standards are set and do not change, no matter how uncomfortable or unpopular they are. It’s a narrow road following Jesus, but it leads to forgiveness of sins and eternal life with Him.
